Traditional Orthodontics

Among the orthodontic options offered by dental professionals, there are some that are more innovative and others that are more traditional. Nevertheless, each is worth its weight in gold, depending on the situation. At Le Dentiste, we offer traditional orthodontic treatments, such as braces (good old-fashioned braces). This solution can significantly and permanently improve the alignment of teeth and jaws.

What is Traditional Orthodontics?

Regardless of the constant evolution of the discipline, orthodontic treatments are still based on the same principle.

They aim to mechanically modify the shape of the jaws and the position of the teeth in order to correct dental alignment and occlusion. The best-known method, and still the most common today, is the use of brackets bonded to the teeth and held in place by a wire of adjustable tension. This treatment, better known as braces, gradually remodels and displaces bone and tooth structures.

This approach can be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems. Treatments can be started as early as adolescence, when the dentition is complete (with the exception of wisdom teeth). They are also possible in adulthood, thanks to constant innovations in the field of orthodontics. The length of treatment may vary, however, depending on the patient's age and level of oral development.

Fully Personalized Traditional Orthodontic Treatment

An initial orthodontic evaluation can be carried out as early as age 7, as well as during adolescence and adulthood. During this assessment, our dentists will be able to suggest orthodontic solutions for you, whatever your age or the type of problem detected (malpositioned teeth, irregular alignment, malocclusion, etc.). We'll tailor our approach to each patient's needs and situation, and offer personalized follow-up care, even after treatment is complete (braces are usually required), to ensure lasting results.

Problems Corrected in Orthodontics

  • Malocclusions: These result from a mismatch (in shape or positioning) between the upper and lower jaws. There are several patterns of irregular occlusion. An underbite occurs when the lower teeth are too far forward, overlapping the upper teeth in the resting position, and an overbite occurs when the upper jaw is too far forward. An open bite is characterized by a gap between the two dental arches, so that the front teeth never fully touch. It's worth noting that in many malocclusions (known as phase 1), the relationship between the first molars is correct, but other skeletal anomalies complicate the relationship between the teeth. Regardless, these malocclusions are a source of joint pain and problems with chewing and speech.
  • Dental Alignment Problems: Given the irregular shape of the jaw and the lack of space in the dental arch, teeth are not always positioned correctly. They may lie outside the dental arch, spread apart or overlap. These irregularities affect not only the appearance of the smile, but also its functionality and health, since in many cases teeth are more prone to plaque and tartar build-up and wear.

Our team in Châteauguay is here to help you and your children improve the alignment of your smile for good.
