Exam & Cleaning
The examination is at the heart of routine dental appointments. These also include dental cleaning, an equally essential preventive operation.
Good oral hygiene and healthy habits (e.g., avoidance of smoking, low-sugar diet, etc.) are essential for a healthy mouth.
Among these beneficial practices are frequent visits to the dentist for a routine examination and professional cleaning. These treatments are essential for the prevention and control of many diseases and conditions.
Routine Check-Ups: to Control Many Problems
The examination is at the heart of routine dental appointments. These also include dental cleaning, an equally essential preventive operation. Together, these two steps help prevent many illnesses and diseases. The examination enables your dentist to identify conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease, wear or deterioration, gum recession, and their potential causes at an early stage. In this way, appropriate treatment can be proposed to prevent the problem from worsening. The dental examination is carried out in stages, so that no part of the mouth or any aspect of its health is overlooked.
The Components of a Dental Exam
- Examination of the teeth: The dentist checks all tooth surfaces for signs of wear, caries or other abnormalities;
- A check of existing restorations and prostheses: We make sure that fillings, crowns and fixed bridges are in good condition and that prostheses fit properly;
- A thorough examination of the gums:we look for inflammation, and if so, we can measure its degree more precisely;
- Screening for oral cancer and other oral pathologies: Soft tissues are checked for suspicious lesions;
- X-rays: At least once a year, X-rays are taken to complement the visual examination and provide a better view of all structures (roots and sides of teeth, periodontal tissues, temporomandibular joints, etc.). This helps refine diagnoses and identify otherwise invisible problems.
Cleaning: Key to Prevention
The other part of the routine visit, cleaning, plays an equally important role in preventing disease, especially gum disease. During this operation, the dental hygienist first performs a thorough scaling. Using a pointed instrument, she removes plaque, but above all tartar, two bacterial deposits that are among the main causes of gingivitis and periodontitis. The preventive effects are all the greater when tartar cannot be removed in any other way. In addition to scaling, the teeth are polished with a rotating grinding wheel to remove any roughness to which plaque may adhere.
