Gum Graft
What is a gum graft? Why is this dental surgery sometimes necessary? At Le Dentiste, we offer different types of gum grafts to improve the strength of gum tissue and prevent the consequences of a common problem: gum recession.
Grafting is an effective way to counteract gingival recession and protect the health of your smile. Our qualified professionals use modern techniques that have a high success rate and promote your comfort during the healing phase.
Gum Grafting to Treat Gingival Recession
Gingival recession is a phenomenon caused by the gradual retreat of gingiva from the roots of teeth, leaving them partially uncovered. The recession may be localized to a single tooth, or affect several teeth. Since it can cause discomfort and oral health problems for the patient, a gum graft may be proposed to reverse it.
As the gums recede, the roots of the teeth become partially exposed to various external stimuli, such as acids and food temperature variations. Unlike dental crowns, roots are not protected by enamel, the natural protective layer of teeth. As a result, these stimuli can reach the dental nerve directly, leading to hypersensitivity. On top of this, the roots also become exposed to bacterial attack and thus to the risk of cavities.
This is why gum grafting is recommended. Gum grafting can be used to treat recession that has already set in, or to reverse a developing problem. Depending on the nature of the problem, the dentist in charge of the graft will choose the most appropriate technique.
Grafting Techniques That Evolved
The gingival grafting techniques we offer are considered more advanced and less unpleasant for the patient, thanks to a number of advances. These methods enable more precise, targeted interventions, reducing trauma to surrounding tissue and improving post-operative comfort. In addition, modern instruments and microsurgical techniques minimize discomfort, shorten healing time, and improve aesthetic and functional results. Unlike older approaches, these techniques often enable better integration of the graft, with less pain and faster recovery for the patient.
Gum Grafting Techniques Offered by Le Dentiste
- Connective Tissue Grafting: Connective tissue grafting is a technique in which a piece of connective tissue is taken from beneath a flap of the patient's palate mucosa. This connective tissue is then placed over the affected area, where the gum has receded. The graft is then covered by the existing gingiva, which is sutured to hold the tissue in place. This technique is often used to cover exposed tooth roots and to thicken gum tissue for reinforcement.
- Free Autogenous Grafting: Free autogenous grafting involves harvesting a small piece of tissue from the surface of the patient's palate, comprising both the epithelium (outer layer) and the underlying connective tissue. This tissue is then grafted directly onto the area of insufficient gingiva or gingival recession. Unlike connective tissue grafting, the tissue grafted in a free autogenous graft is not covered by the existing gingiva, but is simply sutured in place and heals by integrating with the surrounding tissue.
