Kids Dentistry

Toddlers should visit us on a regular basis, as their growing mouths are prone to many disorders and diseases. Fortunately, general dentists are in a position to identify them and offer dental care adapted to children.

We look forward to welcoming you to one of our Le Dentiste clinics to ensure your offspring's oral health and development!

Dental Care for Children: Essential From an Early Age

According to the recommendations of the Canadian Dental Association, young children should see a dentist within six months of the appearance of their first teeth. Although this may seem early, dentists are already in a position to check that growth is proceeding correctly. What's more, oral structures and tissues can become infected at this early age. Hence the importance of an early consultation. From the age of three, routine visits should take place every six months, since childhood is a pivotal period in dental development. Milk teeth, and then the new permanent teeth, are prone to disease and developmental disorders.

Early Childhood Caries: an Infection to Watch Out For

During pediatric check-ups, particular attention is always paid to early childhood caries, the infection that attacks milk teeth, whose enamel is much more fragile. This cavity is very aggressive: it develops and spreads rapidly. Without proper care, it can spread rapidly to surrounding teeth, and even to the entire dentition of a jaw. It also risks attacking the permanent teeth forming in the jaws. That's why it's so important to identify and treat decayed baby teeth, even if they're destined to fall out on their own.

The Components of a Routine Pediatric Check-Up

  • A health check: The dentist examines the teeth and other tissues for signs of pathology. Particular attention is paid to early childhood caries, given its aggressiveness and potential consequences.
  • A growth examination: We make sure that jaw and tooth development is following a normal curve, and that there is sufficient space for this to progress properly. An orthodontic examination may be proposed if disorders are suspected.
  • Preventive care: From the age of three, the little patient also benefits from professional cleaning and the application of a fluoride gel. The cleaning step helps to sanitize the mouth and complement hygiene at home, while the fluoride strengthens enamel to better protect teeth against decay.

A Team to Support Your Child

Children's care includes oral health education. The hygienist and dentist will advise you on the best ways to help your child learn good dental habits. We'll also take the time during routine visits to explain to your little patient how to take good care of his mouth and teeth, and why it's so important!
