Dentures
Although less common than in the past, multiple tooth loss is still a reality for many people. In fact, some people are edentulous, in whole or in part, which causes a number of concerns (aesthetic, functional, health-related). To counter these problems and enable the mouth to function properly, it's possible to replace a large number of teeth at once with a partial or complete dental prosthesis.
When Are Dentures Necessary?
Dentures are hand-made imitation teeth and gums, usually made of acrylic resin.
In its traditional version, it has no fixed anchors. It can be complete or partial, replacing a variable but always significant number of missing teeth.
This type of situation, most often the result of poor oral care, poor hygiene and inadequately treated diseases, directly affects the appearance and functionality of the mouth. A partially or completely edentulous mouth greatly impairs mastication (and digestion) and the pronunciation of certain sounds. What's more, it makes the face look old and unkempt, especially as the cheek muscles are likely to sag as they are no longer lifted and stimulated by the teeth. A partial or full denture can help to alleviate this problem.
Characteristics of Partial and Complete Dentures
- Partial prosthesis: Also known simply as “partial”, this is a series of teeth mounted on acrylic resin that imitates the gums. The appliance has a metal frame with clasps that are hooked onto the natural teeth. This is how it stays in place. It is therefore used to replace a variable number of missing teeth that are adjacent to each other, but can be separated by natural teeth.
- Complete prosthesis: Often called a denture, this prosthesis is designed to replace all the teeth in a jaw. It has no clasps or anchors, and is held in place by a snug fit and suction effect. Alternatively, a specially designed adhesive can be used. If properly made, they can restore a good deal of masticatory capacity, as well as giving the face a more attractive appearance. Traditional full dentures are also easy to remove for cleaning, as are the oral structures.
