Customized Trays Treatment: a Safe and Effective Option
We offer homemade teeth whitening, which comes in the form of a gel that is placed inside a custom-made tray. We recommend wearing the tray for 45 to 60 minutes every day for 2 to 4 weeks. We also offer chair-side treatment, performed in the clinic in 60 to 90 minutes using a gel applied directly to the teeth and activated by a photoluminescent beam. In all cases, touch-ups are suggested after 6 or 12 months.
When Should I Have a Teeth Whitening Treatment?
First of all, it's important to know that teeth are naturally lustrous, with a lighter or lighter shade of white, depending on the individual. This shade is that of the enamel, the pearly outer layer that protects the rest of the tooth. Teeth are subject to yellowing and discoloration. These phenomena can have structural causes or be linked to stain accumulation.
In the first case, it's mainly enamel thinning, due to ageing and normal wear, bruxism, a diet high in sugar and acid or poor hygiene, that causes the color change. At this point, the dentin, the yellow part beneath the enamel, becomes visible. Trauma, deep oral infections and certain medications can also lead to tooth discoloration. These situations are irreversible and cannot be corrected by a whitening treatment. This type of care is therefore possible if the yellowing is moderate and caused by an accumulation of stains from tobacco or dark foods and drinks.
Different Whitening Options
- Universal Treatments: Sold freely, in pharmacies or online, they come in the form of “pencils”, sticky strips or fillable trays. These treatments use an active agent, often hydrogen peroxide. As the dosage is the same for everyone, results are variable and short-lived, leading to repeated treatments that damage enamel over the long term;
- Whitening Hygiene Products: Some toothpastes, mouthwashes and other everyday products contain whitening agents, notably charcoal. Concentrations are often quite low, which limits results, but not their abrasive nature, which is harmful to enamel;
- Professional Treatments: Whether you're talking about chair-side whitening (carried out entirely in the clinic, in one or two sessions) or customized tray whitening (done at home), they are fully supervised by your dentist. The parameters are tailored to the original color of the teeth and the desired results. The active ingredient used is more concentrated, but better than calibrated, for more satisfying, longer-lasting results.
