What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw surgically inserted into the jawbone

During the healing period that follows, it fuses with the bone. Once this process (called osseointegration) is complete, an abutment is placed to anchor a custom-made crown, bridge or prosthesis (removable or fixed) in durable, aesthetic materials.

Simply put, dental implants are artificial roots for single or multiple replacement teeth. It's a solution that requires a certain investment of time (the whole procedure takes a few months) and money, but offers many advantages (durability, stability, aesthetics, preservation of bone structures, versatility).

Les mini-implants : une option supplémentaire

Mini-Implants: an Additional Option

At Le Dentiste, we also offer mini-implants, which are smaller implants. They are generally easier to install and heal faster. They are used, for example, to support removable prostheses. They can also be placed in more visible locations or in slightly resorbed bone, since they require less bone density and depth.

Stages in the Implant Process

  1. Assessment: Before proceeding with the procedure, its feasibility must first be determined. X-rays and scans are taken to determine the exact physiognomy of the jaw and the density of the bone. The dentist can then recommend the ideal option (type of restoration, number and type of rods - implants or mini-implants) and plan the subsequent steps.
  2. Surgery: During the procedure, performed under local anaesthetic, the dentist makes an incision in the gum to insert the implant, in a precise location and at a pre-established angle, before closing the site with stitches. These steps are repeated for each screw placed
  1. Osseointegration: During the healing period, which averages 3 to 6 months, the implant(s) gradually fuse with the bone.
  2. Installation of the Restoration or Prosthesis: Once osseointegration is complete, an abutment is placed on each implant, before attaching the replacement tooth or teeth designed and fabricated during the healing period.
