Dental Veneers
Irregularly shaped, cracked or broken, discolored and worn teeth, as well as irregular spacing between teeth, directly affect the overall appearance and alignment of the smile. Fortunately, these aspects can be corrected, individually or in combination, with one of the simple treatments available at the dentist: porcelain veneers and bonding.
Dental veneers: why use them? Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of porcelain bonded to the teeth to mask certain defects and regularize the appearance of the teeth.
It's a popular aesthetic treatment that can improve various aspects of the smile (shape, color and brightness of teeth, regularity of smile alignment, width of interdental spaces, etc.) all at once. For minor misalignments, this fast-track treatment (only two visits are needed) can even replace the much more time-consuming and intrusive orthodontic treatment.
Bonding, Also Known as Chair-Side Veneers
It is a tooth reshaping technique performed directly in the clinic, without any prior preparation. Composite resin (the same material used for fillings) is bonded directly to the tooth to fill irregular spaces and regularize tooth shape.
Bonding: an Interesting Option
As the composite resin is bonded directly to the tooth, this technique is popular for correcting more pronounced individual defects. For example, it can mask the color of a blackened or discolored tooth, or reshape a twisted or cracked tooth. Bonding can also be used to fill a diastema (a gap between the upper central incisors) or any other irregular spacing..
Advantages and Disadvantages of Porcelain Veneers
- Advantages: Porcelain veneers provide a natural, lustrous effect that is particularly aesthetically pleasing. This is due to the material used, which is available in different shades to match the rest of the teeth, and the custom-made design, based on dental impressions. Porcelain is also resistant to staining and discoloration, making results more durable.
- Disadvantages: Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite (bonding) veneers. Teeth must also be prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel before installation. This step is performed under local anaesthetic during the first two appointments. It takes time for the shells to be fabricated in the laboratory. Temporary veneers are also applied to protect the teeth during this period.
